Newest Project - Lost Elf - Search All the Mapping Sites at Once

Update: Lost Elf has been moved to to save me money on hosting costs :-) It still has all the same functionality though it’s not quite as pretty.

I’m pleased to announce our newest web application: Lost Elf.

What is it?

Have you ever wondered if you were using the right website to get your driving directions? Is Google Maps really better than MapQuest? Have you had a plan a tricky route and wanted to get the input of every mapping website?

Well now you can! For the same effort you’d spent putting your addresses into another mapping site like MapQuest, you can enter it into Lost Elf and get driving directions from five different websites.

How can I help?

Test it out with various places you have to drive. I don’t leave the house much so I only had 3 addresses to test with :-( So let me know if it’s working well for all the places you go. I’m also curious how different the routes are that each website reccomends so let me know about that too.

We used to write this one. I was generally quite pleased with the framework though it’s still a very young project and that shows in places … My biggest complaint is that it’s so difficult to get the server to see changes you make. And if you don’t understand mod_rewrite, adding an external file like a stylesheet can be a frusterating ordeal indeed. |  Digg |  FURL |  Yahoo! My Web 2.0 |  Reddit

I tried, but Lost Elf wanted my destination city to be a valid 2 letter abbreviation for US State…

And when I made the city the same as the state (UT), it still failed.

    This was on firefox.

Thanks for the report. I believe the alignment is a bit off on those error messages so it probably meant that the state needed to be a valid 2 letter abrr. But if that’s not the case, would you please email me the first start and end addresses you used and I’ll check into it. (gregpinero at

Hey, is it still active or you dumped it already? I wanted to take a look, and I’m getting error 500…
